Piper J-3 Cub airplane model. The simple and economical Cub is one of the most well loved light aircraft of all time, and helped make flying an affordable pastime for thousands of pilots in the years surrounding World War 2.

The Piper Cub began life as the Taylor E2 Tiger Kitten, which was powered by a tiny 15kW (20hp) Brownbach engine. The Tiger Kitten was grossly underpowered and the Taylor Brothers' Airplane Company went bankrupt before a more powerful engine could be found. Businessman William Piper, who had made large profits from the oil industry, purchased a majority holding in the Taylor company in 1931 for $US1000. The company continued building derivatives of the E2 under the Taylor banner through the 1930s. The first aircraft to be called Cub was the E2 powered by a Continental A40. Small numbers were built from 1931.

In 1937 Piper adopted his own name for the company, and the first J3 Cubs were built. The J3 was an improved J2, resulting from a redesign of the three cylinder radial powered H2 by Walter Janouneay. The affordable J3 Cub became a runaway sales success and several thousand were sold before the USA's entry into WW2 saw all J3 production built for the US Army as the L4. Prewar Piper also built the J4 Cub Coupe with side by side seating and the three seat J5 Cub Cruiser.

How do I know if this is ....

Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)

This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those.
