Pendulum is een real-time strategisch spel zonder beurten voor 1–5 spelers. De spelers moeten werkelijke tijd als middel inzetten om hun strategie uit te voeren en hun tegenstanders te overtreffen, waarbij ze tijd enerzijds nodig hebben om verschillende soorten acties uit te voeren, maar anderzijds ook om na te denken en te plannen. Sneller is niet altijd beter! De winnaar is niet diegene die het snelst handelt, maar hij die zijn tijd het beste beheert en investeert.

In de eeuwen dat Surcil, de Tijdloze Koning, over Dünya regeerde, bracht hij de wereld vrede en voorspoed. Nu is de Tijdloze Koning verdwenen. In zijn rijk heerst wanorde en op het Grote Plein van Montbrielle is de grote ijzeren klok tot stilstand gekomen. Legenden voorspellen dat als een leider werkelijk de Tijdloze Koning opvolgt, hij naar het Grote Plein loopt en met een duw aan de slinger een nieuw tijdperk van voorspoed inluidt. In Pendulum is iedere speler een machtig lid van een adellijke familie, die ernaar streeft om de Tijdloze Koning op te volgen en de ware heerser van Dünya te worden. Iedere man of vrouw van adel in het spel is uniek. De spelers geven real-time hun werkers opdrachten, voeren krijgslisten uit en breiden de provincies in hun domein uit om middelen te verkrijgen en op de 4 overwinningssporen vooruit te gaan: macht, prestige, populariteit en legendarische prestaties. Gebruik je tijd verstandig, want de speler die tijdens de laatste raadsbijeenkomst laat zien dat hij het meest geschikt is om te regeren, wordt tot nieuwe Tijdloze Heerser benoemd!
