Het boek is geïllustreerd met meer dan 1000 prachtige kleurenfoto's die de specifieke eigenschappen van de vogels schitterend in beeld brengen.

De serieuze vogelaar blijft niet altijd in eigen land. Hij reist graag naar gebieden waar andere vogels te bewonderen zijn. Het Middellandse Zeegebied is een favoriete bestemming voor Europese vogelaars. Voor dit gebied is deze gids samengesteld. De Atlantische kusten van Iberië en Noord-Afrika vormen de westelijke begrenzing, terwijl het Midden-Oosten de oostgrens bepaalt. Het gebied omvat dus veel verschillende biotopen, van wetlands tot woestijn. Na enkele inleidende paragrafen over hoe het boek te gebruiken en beschrijvingen van de diverse landschapstypen volgen van 440 soorten vogels korte beschrijvingen met duidelijke kleurenfoto's. Kleinere inzetfotootjes vermelden vliegbeelden of andere karakteristieken. Een groot aantal van de beschreven soorten is in de zomer ook in West-Europa te zien. Zij overwinteren in het mildere klimaat, een gedrag dat sommige mensen ook vertonen! Een instructieve gids voor de liefhebber. De Britse auteur heeft al in diverse uitgaven van zijn deskundigheid op vogelgebied blijk gegeven. In Nederlandse vertaling is deze gids voor meer mensen toegankelijk gemaakt. Bevat register op zowel Nederlandse als Latijnse benamingen.
