We volgen de Nederlanders op hun tochten en ontdekken hoe ze suikermolens lieten draaien in Brazilië, diamanten kochten in India, in de clinch geraakten met lokale priesters in Congo en gevangengenomen werden door piraten. We ontmoeten Afrikaanse tot slaaf gemaakte huisbediendes, krijgen Chinese gezanten op bezoek, zien Turkse snorren die ons angst inboezemden en proeven lekkere koffie en thee van overzee. We waren bang voor wat van buitenaf kwam, maar leerden het ook te omarmen. We hadden angst wanneer we zelf vertrokken, maar slaagden erin die te overwinnen.

Gewone mensen waren de radertjes van de globalisering in die periode. Het zijn zij die op de voorgrond treden in deze alternatieve geschiedenis. Het waren hun gevoelens die hen gidsten om hun en onze wereld te veranderen.
