Creatine is een endogeen aminozuurderivaat dat wordt geproduceerd door gewervelde dieren en voornamelijk voorkomt in spiercellen.

In principe is het een zuur dat je lichaam via je nieren en lever kan aanmaken nadat je eiwitten hebt gegeten. Dierlijke eiwitten, vooral rood vlees en vis, bevatten van nature creatine, maar je zou onmogelijke hoeveelheden van elk moeten eten om het niveau te bereiken dat beschikbaar is in de meeste creatinesupplementen.

Spieren zetten creatine om in creatinefosfaat, dat vervolgens wordt omgezet in adenosinetrifosfaat (ATC), dat uw lichaam gebruikt voor energie.
