Port wordt al zon 400 jaar in Portugal gemaakt voor de Engelse markt. Omdat de wijnen uit Portugal niet altijd genoeg houdbaarheid hadden om de bootreis naar Engeland te overleven, werd er gezocht naar oplossingen hiervoor. Eerst werd er aan de wijn wat brandewijn toegevoegd. Later werd het definitieve produkt port ontwikkeld doordat men de gisting van de wijn ging stoppen door toevoeging van wijnalcohol. Hierdoor houdt de wijn die als basis voor de port dient restzoet door niet vergiste suikers. Rode port heeft verschillende soorten: ruby (jong robijnrood), tawny (ouder, bruinrood), pale tawny (oud, bruinachtig). Port met wijnjaar: Vintage, late-bottled vintage, colheita (licht rood). Er bestaat ook witte port en sinds kort zelfs soms een rose port.
