Candidates have travelled from far and wide to complete their training here with us including from as far as Bermuda and American Samoa!

We started delivering instructor level training in 2009 and have received multiple awards for our contribution to Outstanding Contribution to Diver Education in 2013 and in 2016 and for Outstanding Contribution to Instructor Development.

Our Team

Our team is headed up by our owner Mick Wheatley. Mick has been diving since he was 15 and working in the dive industry since January 1997 and delivering instructor level training since 2008. Having trained people locally, up and down the east coast of Australia and travelling around the Asia Pacific region to train others.

Our Key Instructor Development team member is Dillon, Dillon came to Brisbane Dive Academy in 2016 as an Open Water Diver and has worked his way through the ranks to achieve the rating of SSI Instructor Trainer. Dillon can be found most days mentoring divers of all levels passing on valuable lessons he has picked during his career.

Supporting Mick and Dillon is an instructional team who provide an additional perspective and support to the training you will so you don't just learn from one person. You will get advice and help from a number of highly trained and motivated individuals so that way you can take the best of everyone then apply and adapt that information to you so that you can become the best instructor you can be.

What is involved in the Instructor ?

Brisbane Dive Academy's Instructor Training Course runs for 10 days straight, starting on a Thursday and going through until the Saturday.  The Sunday is a day off to rest and relax before the Instructor Examination starts on the Monday.

During this program you will complete:

• Knowledge Development Presentations
• Confined Water Skill Presentations
• Open Water Skill Presentations
• Rescue Assessment
• Dive Skill Assessment
• Exams
• 400m Swim and 15 min Tread water

Prior to starting you will need to have completed the following:

• SSI ITC Online materials
• Dive Medical (valid within 12 months)
• Current First Aid Certificate
• Current Advanced Resuscitation Certificate

One of the best things about the Instructor Training Course is that there is no maximum number of attempts. So long as you put in the effort and preparation, you will be successful not only in the ITC but also at the Instructor Examination and more importantly in real life.

Instructor Examinations

IE's are scheduled for 2 days after the completion of the ITC.  These are typically the Monday and Tuesday.  The cost of the IE is not included in the cost of the ITC and is payable directly to SSI.  The cost of the IE is $965*

What is do I need to bring?

• Online Acaemic Verification
• Current Dive Medical (no more than 9 months old)

 What can I do to prepare?

One of the best things you can do to prepare is relax, and since most of us can't relax before going into a course or examination the next best thing is to study and ask us to get out on one of our Open Water Diver courses to assist and brush up on those in water skills! 

How much?

The ITC is $3,495

The SSI IE fee is payable directly to SSI

For NON-SSI members ie. PADI/SDI/RAID Divemaster, there is a once off $121 professional registration fee.
