Bullseye Rock Mushroom (Fungiidae Coral) (Orange Rhodactis sp.)

(Also known as Orange Bullseye Mushroom Coral, Hairy Mushroom Coral, or Elephant Ear Mushroom Coral)

Overview

The Orange Bullseye Rock Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.) is a vibrant and hardy soft coral (Corallimorpharian)celebrated for its rich orange colouration and distinctive bullseye pattern. Its large, fleshy disc features radiating rings or zones of contrasting tones, often highlighted with subtle reds, golds, or green undertones. Covered in short, bubble-like vesicles that give a soft, textured look, this coral adds both colour and dimension to shaded areas of the reef. Adaptable, resilient, and visually striking, the Orange Bullseye Mushroom is an ideal coral for aquarists seeking to bring warmth and contrast to their display.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Commonly found in protected reef slopes, lagoons, and shaded rock crevices, where light and water flow are moderate to low.

Feeding

The Orange Bullseye Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, hosting zooxanthellae that provide most of its energy. It also benefits from occasional feeding to enhance growth and colour intensity. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, fish, clam)
  • Mysis or enriched brine shrimp
  • Marine snow or fine coral foods

Target feeding promotes faster tissue growth and helps maintain vibrant pigmentation.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting.Rhodactis prefers gentle, diffused illumination and may bleach under high-intensity lighting.

  • PAR range: 50–150 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Ideal placement in shaded or lower sections of the aquarium.
  • Blue and actinic spectrums enhance the coral’s orange fluorescence and contrast.
Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle currents are best, allowing the coral to expand fully while preventing debris accumulation. Excessive flow can cause the coral to close or detach from its substrate.

Placement
  • Place on lower rockwork or sandy substrate where light and flow are subdued.
  • Ensure space for expansion, as Rhodactis can grow large and spread through budding.
  • Avoid placing directly next to aggressive stinging corals or in areas with sharp rock edges.
  • Excellent for shaded sections, under ledges, or in corners of mixed reef systems.
Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (wrasses, gobies, tangs, clownfish, blennies, etc.)
  • Invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs
  • Other soft corals and non-aggressive LPS species

Avoid:

  • Aggressive stinging corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)
  • Large angelfish or butterflyfish that may pick at its fleshy tissue
Aggression

Moderate. While not equipped with long sweeper tentacles, Rhodactis can release mild toxins (allelopathy) and overgrow nearby corals, competing for space. Allow sufficient spacing to prevent interference.

Experience Level

Beginner. The Orange Bullseye Mushroom Coral is exceptionally hardy and forgiving, making it an excellent choice for aquarists of all skill levels. It adapts easily to varied lighting and nutrient levels and thrives in both nano and large reef aquariums.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 380–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerant up to 15 ppm)
  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); suitable for nano reefs or larger systems

Consistent water quality and moderate nutrients support healthy tissue and maintain vibrant orange tones.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Orange Bullseye Rock Mushroom Coral adds brilliant colour and subtle movement to the reef aquarium. Its resilience and adaptability make it a perfect coral for shaded or low-light areas, contributing warmth and natural balance to mixed or soft coral systems.

Great as a ‘pantry’ item for making a meal without previous planning.
Flavor Name: Variety Pack
Because of limited mobility, I never know who will do my grocery shopping and meal preparation. In other words, I can only count on having vegetables half of the time. I love adding this as a side dish or mixing it in with an entree. They work well cold or thrown into a hot dish. My favorites are the ‘riced’ cauliflower & the artichoke. I love the taste of the asperagus but found my body produced an even stronger aroma (if you know what I mean about asperagus eating) in this, possibly, more intense format. Very Satisfying all around. Great substitue for something more starchy.

Crisp but with sour taste from lactic acid.
Flavor Name: Variety Pack
Thought it might be nice to have pantry stable veggies. However, they have a noticeable sourness due to the lactic acid used as preservative. This is probably necessary to avoid heating/cooking as is done with canned vegetables. They are much crispier than canned vegetables. The sourness might be fine in some dishes or to some tastes.
