Spearmint is a refreshing and hardy perennial herb that is particularly well-suited for the Pakistani climate. It is a staple in local kitchens for making refreshing raita, chutneys, and the classic "Pudina" tea.
Product Description
Spearmint is characterized by its bright green, lance-shaped leaves with a "toothed" margin and a unique, crinkled texture. Unlike peppermint, spearmint has a sweeter, more mellow flavor because it contains less menthol. It is a vigorous grower that spreads through underground runners, making it an excellent choice for ground cover in shaded areas or for container gardening.
Growing Instructions
1. Sowing Season
-
Primary Season: February to March (Spring) is the ideal time to sow seeds in Pakistan to allow the plant to establish before the monsoon.
-
Secondary Season: September to October (Autumn) is also suitable as the temperature begins to cool.
2. Soil and Location
-
Soil: Use rich, loamy soil with plenty of organic matter.
-
Sunlight: In Pakistan’s intense heat, spearmint performs best in partial shade. Ensure it receives morning sunlight but is protected from the scorching afternoon sun.
-
Container Choice: Because mint is invasive and can take over a garden, it is best grown in pots or dedicated planters.
3. Sowing the Seeds
-
Technique: Scatter the tiny seeds on the surface of moist soil. Do not bury them deep, as they need some light to germinate.
-
Spacing: If planting in the ground, space plants about 25 cm apart.
-
Germination: Keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) until sprouts appear, usually within 10–15 days.
4. Plant Care
-
Watering: Spearmint loves water. During the hot summer months in regions like Punjab or Sindh, you may need to water your plants daily.
-
Height: The plant typically grows to a height of about 50 cm.
-
Pruning: Regularly pinch off the top leaves to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming "leggy".
-
-
5. Harvesting
-
-
-
You can start harvesting individual leaves as soon as the plant is a few inches tall.
-
For the best flavor, harvest in the morning after the dew has dried.
