The factory turbo found on the 2006-2019 Duramax powered Chevy and GMC trucks are a Variable Vane Turbo (VVT), sometimes called a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT).These turbos feature movable "vanes" that essentially make the turbine side of the turbo expand and contract internally to create more or less backpressure into the engine. The actuating of this is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) based on signals it receives from the Vane Position Sensor (VPS) located on the turbo. In the event that the VPS fails or does not give accurate signals, then the ECM cannot properly determine the status of the turbo and trigger a check engine light and poor drivability. Its not uncommon for this to fail due to the high heat and soot this sensor is subjected to, so fortunately Dorman has this direct replacement sensor that will plug and thread right into the stock sensor's location.
