VIOLET VINYL LP.

"From the very beginning, fans have fallen in love with Jensen McRae for the sharp, evocative and clear-eyed songwriting. McRae songwriting is vulnerable, yes, but it’s also powerful for not holding back. Now, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! delivers McRae’s evolution from a promising young artist to a bona fide songwriter and star. "The most profound choices of my life,” says McRae, “have often felt like things I did before I was ready to do, and I had to grow into them.” I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! is about what follows when you have withstood what you thought might crush you. It’s about meeting your limits and learning what you’re capable of.Born and raised in LA, Jensen McRae has studied and made music for most of her life. She attended Grammy Camp in high school and graduated from USC’s Thornton School of Music with a degree in Popular Music. McRae’s debut album, Are You Happy Now?, was written mostly when she was just 21, and was the first step in developing her now-devoted fanbase. Are You Happy Now? navigates identity from its deepest foundations – life as a young, bi-racial Black and Jewish woman – to its most personal musings – do I trust you, do I trust myself. McRae’s trust in herself has borne out on multiple occasions, most recently and maybe most famously in the form of "Massachusetts". McRae posted a solo verse and chorus, little more than a piece of a demo, and it caught fire online. Covers, duets, and an avalanche of new fans followed, and McRae capped the moment with a finished version and a summerlong tour supporting Noah Kahan. I Don’t Know How but They Found Me! Takes McRae’s now-considerable powers and hardwires them for mass appeal. Stealth single “Savannah” is one for the yearners. The pulsing, country-adjacent song immediately brings the best of Phoebe Bridgers to mind, with McRae singing in an acrobatic whisper over a feather light acoustic guitar. By the time “Savannah” hits its crescendo, it’s crystal clear McRae is an artist with her own singular power, as piano layers with guitar and McRae delivers a series of scathing indictments with grit and conviction: "You swore you'd raise our kids to end up just like you / well you're a false prophet / and that's a goddamn promise." Meanwhile “Let Me Be Wrong” is a bona fide anthem, a “buoyant ode to rejecting perfectionism.” Built once again on a simple vocal and acoustic guitar, “Let Me Be Wrong” builds step over step in its defiance; guitars layer, drums pick up the pace, and McRae makes space for everyone’s mistakes. When McRae growls “fuck those girls got everything” it’s a punch of both power and vulnerability, begging to be shouted in unison the biggest possible crowd. The unusual title of her second album is taken from a line in McRae's favorite film, Back to the Future. A key protagonist survives a hail of bullets, and the image resonated with McRae. “I really connected with the idea that I could've easily collapsed beneath the weight of what happened to me, but I didn't. I didn't even know it,” McRae says, “but I was bulletproof the whole time.""

A beautifully written and illustrated tale of kindness, courage and (imaginary) friendship
Format: Hardcover
A beautifully written and illustrated tale of kindness, courage and friendship (even if the friend is in your imagination). This is a great picture book for building self-esteem and for helping early learners to discover ways to overcome obstacles by showing how upbeat confidence boosting self-talk is the way to go. I adore this beautiful family and how the climb up the slide's stairs is so relatable-you just feel the endless up, up, up as you ascend, like climbing up the stairs of the high dive and looking down and just that whoosh of fear that vertakes you from the seemingly dizzying height. I love the kindness on all the adults' faces and the cute expressions from the child. The lion is magnificent. I love that it gives shape to a child’s imaginary friend and that this friend is a true safety net -which is really the child being their own safety net. The end pages are bright orange and sunny, using the cute lion face in the pattern and all the illustrations, which are predominantly blue and yellow/orange illustrations are the perfect backdrop for the tumble of dark curls on the child’s head which allow the size of the lion to appear gigantic, and yet, calm and sweet like a kitty cat. Very sweet book! I love its message of bravery, confidence building and how you can truly be your own best friend.

Sweet Story about facing your fears!
Format: Hardcover
A trusted comrade, a little girl’s lion is always there. Her lion helps her through times of stress, or if she makes a mistake, or if she is nervous. A girl and her lion, the dream team! One day the little girl goes on a new adventure, a brand new slide arrived at the playground and she can’t wait to try it with Lion. The ladder is a bit taller than she thought and with every climb, uncertainty starts to creep in. This slide is so high! How will we ever get down? The young girl wonders. Turning back towards Lion (since this is usually the part her brave lion steps in to help) she notices that he is afraid too! This is such a sweet story about facing your fears! I love the bright yellow and orange with blue color palette. Having a lion inside to symbolize bravery is such a wonderful way to help young readers with facing their fears. We love to teach our children that fear is a healthy response, it’s a message that our body is giving us! It is also healthy to work past that fear (although sometimes we need some help doing just that).

Love!
Format: Hardcover
A little girl feels like she can courageously tackle anything with the help of her brave lion. When she climbs a tall slide, however, and her lion becomes afraid, she must summon her own strength to overcome her fear.  I especially love the illustrations in this validating and reassuring read.

During tonight's bedtime reading, the captivating illustrations had my toddler completely engrossed, eagerly demanding, "again, again!" The blend of fun and valuable lessons in the story is truly a standout. It brilliantly addresses concepts of fear and doubt, offering young readers a guide on how to conquer them.
