Shh! We Have A Plan

The winner of the 2014 Association of Illustrators' Award for Children's Books, Shh! is the covetable new picture book from Chris Haughton, one of the most exciting new voices in children's literature.

From Chris Haughton, the multi award-winning author-illustrator of A Bit Lost and Oh No, George!, comes a picture book about a beautiful bird, four friends and plans gone wrong... The friends are out for a walk. Suddenly, they spot it – a beautiful bird perched high in a tree! They simply must have it and – shh!– they have a plan. So they tip-toe very slowly, nets poised – 'Ready one ... ready two ... ready three ... GO!' But, at the turn of the page, we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully oblivious bird, flying away. One hilarious foiled plan after another and it's clear that this goofy gang cannot catch that elusive birdie! But the littlest of this group, a quiet spectator up until now, knows that a bit of kindness can go a long way... Will his friends follow his gentle lead or will they get themselves into even more trouble?

'With a minimalist test of just over a hundred words, aided by a judiciously selective use of colour, Haughton entertainingly relates (verbally and visually) the escapades of a group of hapless creatures intent on becoming bird-catchers. Collage and silhouette are employed effectively to enhance the comedy of a situation where, in spite of all the plans in the world, success in capturing the little coloured bird remains elusive.' - Children’s Books Ireland Recommended Read

'Every art-room, every classroom, every home should have multiple copies.' - Inis

'Chris Haughton is the master of understated ridiculous, and his newest, Shh! We Have a Plan, is no exception.' - The Bulletin

'Chris Haughton is an Irish designer and illustrator and was named one of Booktrust’s Best New Illustrators in 2011.' - Mummy Pages

'Ingenious storytelling and the perfect way to encourage a lifetime of reading.' - Lancashire Evening Post

They're okay, but they're quite bulky.
I liked the design and overall application of these, but they don't fit my needs. They definitely work well at protecting my hands from freezing weather, but they are way too bulky for regular motorcycle use. In my opinion, I feel that these would be much more suited for a snowmobile or ATV. If you treat them as what they’re mostly designed for — ATV/snow-related riding or cold-weather utilitarian use — these gloves are a solid buy. They deliver warmth, weather protection, and decent control through the TPU windows. But if you put them on a fast street motorcycle or expect “motorcycle-glove” levels of control and feel — they’ll likely disappoint or even pose safety trade-offs. In that context, lighter and more control-oriented gloves would probably serve you better. The reason I'm docking stars is because they're marketed toward motorcycle users, and they;re very impractical. The durability seems pretty good, as I've taken them out and even had a couple of rocks/road debris hit the TPU windows with no scratches or punctures. They're not super comfortable to use at highway speeds, especially since they fit so loose, and they tend to press my front brake/clutch which is very dangerous. I personally cannot recommend this product for motorcycle use, unless you already have handguards, which will probably negate the need for these at all. Invest in some good heated gloves and/or heated grips, and I think you'll be much safer and better off in the end. For the price, I think this is a good value, but they're just not for me.

All ATV owners need these.
These gloves are fabulous. Anybody having fun on a ATV need these. With my hand warmer and these gloves, I don’t wear anything else on my hands. They are great.

handlebar mittens
Too big. If using during snow plowing they are a burden due to need to take hands off controls, and shift from forward to reverse. Might be okay if just riding around on trails, etc.

Good quality, not great on clutch
The quality of these is very good. They break the wind very well. Too well, actually. On my bike when going above 60 MPH they press hard enough on the clutch to be a problem. I'm sure I'll still use them but they won't be of any value on the interstate. It's possible to hold the clutch while using them but, for me at least, I don't have the strength to do it for my 45 minute commute. Unfortunately, the openings seem to fold up making it difficult to get gloved hands into them quickly, which is my reason for subtracting a star.
