Not every famous warship carried thirty cannons. Some simply rammed you.

More than 2,500 years before Nelson, Trafalgar, or the USS Constitution, the Greek bireme ruled the Mediterranean. Long, lean, and astonishingly fast, it relied on 50 synchronized oarsmen and a bronze-clad ram capable of punching straight through an enemy hull.

It's one of history's earliest purpose-built warships. And it also happens to make one of the most distinctive wooden ship models you'll ever build.

Unlike traditional square-rigged sailing ships, the Bireme has very little standing rigging. Instead, the project focuses on shaping a graceful hull, constructing the exposed rowing platform, installing dozens of oars, and bringing an ancient vessel to life with clean woodworking rather than endless knots.

For many experienced ship modelers, it's the perfect "palette cleanser" after finishing a complicated frigate.

Main Features

A Different Kind of Ship Model

If you've already built a few sailing ships, the Greek Bireme feels refreshingly different. No towering masts. No maze of shrouds and ratlines. Just elegant hull lines, visible structure, and one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the ancient world.

Substantial Walnut Planking

The timber supplied by Dusek is excellent. The laser-cut plywood fits accurately, and the walnut planking is noticeably thicker than what you find in many standard kits. Because the wood is so substantial, most builders find it easier to fair the hull with a sharp scraper or carving blade rather than sanding for hours—a technique that produces beautifully fair hull lines with surprisingly little effort.

A Relaxing Intermediate Project

This isn't a beginner snap-together kit, but neither is it a multi-year ship-of-the-line. The construction is straightforward, the rigging is intentionally simple, and most of the enjoyment comes from carefully assembling the rowing benches, shields, rudders, and distinctive twin banks of oars. It's the kind of project that rewards patience without becoming overwhelming.

Outstanding Display Value

At only about 15½ inches long, the finished model fits comfortably on a bookshelf or desk while still attracting attention.

Few visitors know what a bireme is. Everyone asks.

Builder's Bench Notes

Experienced modelers who have completed this kit shared a few helpful observations:

Fairing the Hull: The walnut planking is thick enough that scraping generally works better than aggressive sanding when fairing the hull.

Study the Plans: Spend a little time studying the full-size plans before beginning. The instruction booklet is clear enough, but somewhat concise, and the drawings answer most questions.

Detailing: Thin CA glue works particularly well for attaching the delicate railings and smaller deck details.

Finishing: Several builders choose to stain or oil the walnut rather than paint the hull black, allowing the beautiful grain to remain visible while still achieving an authentic appearance.

A Ship That Changed Naval Warfare

The Greek bireme emerged during the 6th century B.C. and became one of the Mediterranean's most effective fighting ships. Powered by fifty oarsmen arranged in two staggered banks—twenty-five per side—it combined remarkable speed with exceptional maneuverability. A crew of marines stood ready to board enemy vessels once the bronze ram had done its work.

Unlike later sailing warships, the mast wasn't intended for combat. Before battle, the sail and much of the rigging were lowered so the crew could rely entirely on human power, allowing the ship to accelerate, turn, and strike with surprising precision.

Simple by later naval standards. Deadly in its own time.

Very nice little box.
This is a great little jewelry box. I don’t have tons of jewelry right now, so this fits everything well, and the leather-look material is very nice. I like the simple design and organization, and it is a nice size to travel with. It looks really pretty sitting on my dresser and goes with the aesthetic of my home well.
