The name is derived from a Gaelic expression meaning "son of the heroes" or "son of the bear", and the clan traces its descent from a twelfth century son of the former Royal House of Lorner. As supporters of the mighty MacDonald Lords of the Isles, the clan was in many conflicts with authority, and by order of James I the clan chief was executed in 1427.
