A clan tradition is that it is descended from a son of the Irish Fergus Erc, who founded the kingdom of Dalriada after landing in Argyll in the early sixth century. Balquhidder and Strathearn in Perthshire became the ancestral homes of this clan, which distinguished itself in numerous battles, including the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
