The sacred Rejang dance unfolds in the heart of Tenganan, an ancient Balinese village where time-honored traditions remain unbroken. Draped in the rare Geringsing fabric—Tenganan’s legendary double ikat textile—the dancers move with quiet grace, their hair adorned with delicate gold flowers that catch the dim light.

Traditionally, Rejang is a dance of purification, an offering to cleanse the village of malevolent spirits and restore harmony. Accompanied by the mesmerizing resonance of a gamelan orchestra, the dancers glide through the village in ritual procession, their movements both solemn and entrancing. The ceremony unfolds over several hours, punctuated by rhythmic pauses, as devotion and endurance merge into a timeless expression of Balinese spirituality.

Captured in a monochromatic mood at 8 p.m., Impetus is bathed in an ethereal glow, the only light source streaming from behind the dancers. Shadows stretch and merge, intensifying the mystical aura of the ritual. That night, the ceremony continued late into the evening, ending only at 10 p.m., leaving behind an air thick with reverence, music, and the unseen energy of a tradition carried through generations.
