Alexander Semeonovitch Liberman (September 4, 1912 – November 19, 1999) was a Ukrainian-American magazine editor, publisher, painter, photographer, and sculptor. He held senior artistic positions during his 32 years at Condé Nast Publications.
First published in 1960, the book was immediately recognized as one of the most original books on art ever published - a record of Author's visits to the studios of many of the great painters and sculptors who lived in France during the 20th century. Drawing on his profound understanding of modern art, his friendship with its greatest European masters, and his skill as a photographer, Liberman has constructed visual and verbal mediation on art and the act of creation; an invaluable source-book for everyone interested in the history of modern art. Now he has returned to his classic work, to refresh it with a completely new design, additional text and many more photographs of the artists and their surroundings, as well as reproductions of their works. Here are his pilgrimages to the studios of Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, Bonnard and Kandinsky; his lively, probing, revealing conversations with Matisse, Braque, Giacometti and many others; and his visits to artists not included in the 1st edition - Balthus and Sonia Delaunay. Continuing his long acquaintance with Picasso, Liberman shows us the artist in the 1960s, in his last studio at Mougins - still vigorous and productive, still endowed with the curiosity, energy and genius that lead the Author to rank him as the greatest artist of the 20th century. And, as Liberman comments knowledgeably in words and images on the artists' working methods, subjects and idiosyncrasies of technique, he uses the visible elements of their art and lives to elucidate the deep sources of their inspiration and greatness: light, landscapes, intellectual passion, profound human relationships. Virtually every section of the book has been enhanced with photographs not used earlier. Preserving all the empathy and erudition that gave the original book its special charm and enduring value, this revised edition now offers us a new, more comprehensive, more colourful visit to The Artist in his Studio. With 216 illustrations, 161 in colour & 55 duotone.
