Stag Cantata Mid-Century Chest of Drawers – 1960s Vintage Furniture (Sussex, England) Designed by John and Sylvia Reid.

For lovers of mid-century modern furniture, this Stag Cantata teak double chest of drawers is an exceptional find. Dating back to the 1960s, this vintage STAG Teak Chest of Drawers showcases the timeless craftsmanship of Stag Furniture, a British brand renowned for its high-quality, stylish, and functional designs. With clean lines, warm teak tones, and practical storage, this piece embodies the essence of Scandinavian-inspired mid-century design, making it a fantastic addition to any retro, vintage, or modern interior.

Quality & Condition

This original Stag Cantata chest of drawers is in good used condition, with all eight drawers smoothly sliding on their runners. Constructed with dovetail joints, the drawers offer durability and longevity, ensuring this classic piece remains functional and stylish for years to come. The interiors are clean and tidy, ideal for storing clothing, accessories, or household essentials.

To preserve its authentic character, we have cleaned and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces. However, we have left the original finish untouched, meaning there are some signs of wear and tear consistent with age and use.

  • The handles show light wear, but they remain structurally sound.
  • The drawer fronts have minor superficial marks, but nothing significant to detract from the overall appearance.
  • The top surface has some scuffs and marks, typical of a piece of this age—please refer to the photos for a detailed look.

Overall, this mid-century STAG Teak Chest of Drawers is in well-preserved condition, retaining its rich patina and character while remaining fully functional.

🔎 Provenance Story

We found this elegant Stag Cantata chest of drawers in a classic 1960s semi-detached home near Hove — the kind with original parquet floors, full-height windows, and a real appreciation for space-age optimism. The chest had belonged to a retired design lecturer, part of a full bedroom suite purchased new in 1965 and cared for meticulously ever since.

What stood out immediately was the harmony between form and function: the sleek drawer pulls, the warm sheen of well-aged teak. You could tell it wasn’t just furniture — it was a considered choice, made in a time when British design was stepping confidently into the modern world.

The original Stag label was still present inside the drawer, and the piece had clearly lived a life of quiet utility. We chose to clean and wax it gently, preserving the original finish and character. The result? A timeless classic with just the right amount of patina — ready to bring understated mid-century elegance into a new setting.

A Brief History of Stag Furniture:

  • Early Years:

Founded in 1906 as the "Stag Cabinet Company" in Nottinghamshire, England, by Cyril Alstead and Leonard Levy, the company initially focused on high-quality wooden furniture.

  • Post-War Modernism:
In the 1950s and 1960s, under the leadership of John Birkett, Stag Furniture embraced modernist design trends, offering sleek and minimalist furniture pieces.

    John and Sylvia Reid:
The brand gained significant popularity after employing husband and wife designers, John and Sylvia Reid,      who designed the "Cantata" range, a minimalistic bedroom suite, and later the "Madrigal" and "S" ranges.

Durable
If you have an aggressive chewer this will hold up for about a month. After about a month of daily use my police k9 will get the ends off. Is it completely indestructible no, does it hold up better then any other toy he’s had absolutely. When you have a dog with super high toy drive you understand nothing is indestructible but I will say a month for a toy to last with my dog is great and I accept the fact I just have to buy new toys monthly. For reference my dog will destroy a Kong in about half the time.

GREAT DURABILITY FOR MY XL SUPER CHEWER !
My dog LOVESSSSS this toy. It’s definitely one of her favorites! I have a Pit-Mastiff mix and she loves to chew toys, but her breed also means she’s got an outrageous amount of strength in those jaws, making it hard to find toys that can last without getting torn up super easily. We typically buy Kong “Super Chewer” toys and this has held up better than those! We’ve had it a good few months and it’s super durable. She gnaws on this thing every day for a good bit of time, and it doesn’t have any weak spots, holes, chunks missing, NOTHING, except a few dimples. It’s firm but also has give to it that (I think) really provides a good chewing option. It’s got enough weight and give to it that I can throw it for her and it’ll bounce without flying around crazy like some toys. The toy itself is not super cute, but my dog definitely is when she’s carrying it around everywhere 🥹 My only con is that I wish it came in other colors! I was surprised that she liked it so much because she typically prefers bright colored toys like red/orange/blue/green. It took some time, but once she warmed up to it and realized she could chew as hard as she wanted on it, it was game over from there.

Extremely Durable
This is truely for heavy chewers. Both my bully mixes have chewed through every bone/ball including Kong. They have had these for about 6 months and they are hardly worn. The dogs love chewing on them too. I wish they came in flavors.

Must have toy
Found out the hard way my sweet little shy rescue pup can chew through any toy in under 5 min. If it says indescribable they have never met her....until this toy. It has been almost two weeks now. She loves this thing and you cannot tell she has even tried to destroy it. If she does manage to somehow I am instantly buying another. This thing is awesome, a must have for super cheers, and she LOVES it
