Deep Purple Hydrangea is a compact deciduous shrub with an upright habit and distinctly dark flowers.  It has relatively small serrated dark green leaves with no fall color.  Its lacecap flowers that open green bloom on old wood that matures to a color that depends on the soil PH - acidic soils produce very deep violet flowers, while alkaline soils produce burgundy red flowers.  The flowers attract butterflies and pollinators.  Best bloom in partial sun and rich, moist well-drained soils.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  Medium Maintenance. Mulch soil to maintain moisture and overwinter.  If pruning is needed do so after flowering. Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew.  Aphids are occasional problems.   

LANDSCAPE USES:  Accents or Group Plantings, Borders, Woodland Gardens, Foundation Plantings, Hedges, Containers.
