While the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) recommends a maximum ratio of 30:1 (omega-6:omega-3), many commercial foods can have much higher ratios. This imbalance can be problematic, as omega-6 is pro-inflammatory, while omega-3 is anti-inflammatory. Ratios above 6:1 are considered by some experts to be approaching levels that may promote inflammation.

Yes, salmon oil and flaxseed oil are great together for dogs because they contain different types of omega-3 fatty acids, and combining them can provide a wider spectrum of complementary benefits. Salmon oil provides essential EPA and DHA, which are immediately usable, while flaxseed oil provides ALA, which the dog's body can convert into EPA and DHA.

Key benefits of combining Flax & Salmon

Different omega-3s: Salmon oil is rich in EPA and DHA, while flaxseed oil provides ALA. Combining them ensures your dog receives both types of essential fatty acids for a more complete nutritional profile.
Wider range of benefits: Each type of omega-3 supports different functions, so combining them can offer a broader range of health advantages for your dog's skin, coat, immune system, and joints.

Benefits of Flax Oil:

  • Heart Health: Omega-3s in flaxseed oil may reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Digestive Health: Flaxseed oil contains soluble and insoluble fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements and improves gut health.
  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory effects that may help manage conditions like arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Skin Health: Flaxseed oil can nourish and moisturize the skin, reducing dryness and wrinkles.
  • Cognitive Function: Omega-3s are essential for brain health and may improve cognitive function and memory.
  • Hormonal Balance: Flaxseed oil contains lignans, which may help regulate hormones and reduce menopausal symptoms.
  • Improve Fertility: may support fertility by improving ovarian response, oocyte quality, and fertilization rates, potentially due to its omega-3 fatty acids. It can help with hormonal balance, regulate menstrual cycles, and may reduce inflammation, which can benefit both female and male reproductive health. Can increase sperm count and quality by improving blood flow to the reproductive organs. Some studies suggest it can also improve sperm quality in men and embryo quality in women.
  • Other Potential Benefits: Flaxseed oil may have anti-cancer properties and may support weight loss. Reduce Inflammation, Lower high blood pressure in patients with metabolic syndrome, Improved management of menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, Improved bone mineral density and bone strength, Improved weight loss in overweight adults with pre-diabetes.

*Milled flaxseed contains lignans (phytoestrogens) that can bind to hormones like estrogen and testosterone, and a high dose in animal studies has been linked to altered reproductive cycles and development, but flaxseed oil lacks these lignans..

Benefits of Vitamin E Oil:

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for dogs that provides several health benefits, including:

  • Antioxidant Protection: Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals that can damage cells and tissues. This helps prevent oxidative stress, which is linked to various health issues such as cancer, heart disease, and aging.
  • Immune System Support: Vitamin E is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system. It helps protect the body from infections and autoimmune disorders.
  • Skin and Coat Health: Vitamin E promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat by reducing inflammation and improving cell membrane stability. It can also help alleviate skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.
  • Joint Health: Vitamin E may help reduce joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. It improves cartilage health and supports mobility.
  • Muscle Function: Vitamin E is essential for maintaining healthy muscles. It helps prevent muscle degeneration and weakness.
  • Other Benefits: Vitamin E may also support eye health, improve fertility, and reduce the risk of certain neurological disorders.

Vitamin E benefits dog reproduction by acting as an antioxidant that improves sperm quality and supports healthy embryo development. For male dogs, it enhances sperm motility, count, and membrane integrity. For females, it supports healthy embryo development and overall reproductive success.

Benefits of Salmon Oil:

Joint Health: Omega-3s reduce inflammation, improving joint mobility and reducing pain in conditions like arthritis.
Skin and Coat Health: EPA and DHA nourish the skin and coat, promoting shininess, reducing shedding, and alleviating skin conditions like dryness and itchiness.
Brain and Cognitive Function: DHA is essential for brain development and function, supporting cognitive health and memory in older dogs.
Heart Health: Omega-3s help regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and improve heart muscle function.
Immune System: EPA and DHA have anti-inflammatory properties that support a healthy immune system.
Digestive Health: Salmon oil can help improve digestion and reduce diarrhea.
Reproductive Health: Omega-3s may support reproductive health in female dogs.

How Salmon and Flaxseed oil Support Fertility:

Salmon oil and flax oil can be beneficial for fertility because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help regulate hormones, improve egg and sperm quality, reduce inflammation, and enhance blood flow to reproductive organs. These oils can support both male and female fertility by promoting a healthier environment for conception and improving the chances of a successful pregnancy.
Improved egg and sperm quality: Omega-3s are crucial components of cell membranes, and their presence is linked to better egg quality and sperm motility and morphology.
Hormone regulation: These fatty acids help balance hormones, which is essential for a regular menstrual cycle and ovulation.
Reduced inflammation: Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that can help create a healthy uterine environment for embryo implantation and reduce conditions that may impact fertility.
Enhanced blood flow: They improve blood flow to reproductive organs, which is necessary for a healthy environment for conception.
Support for pregnancy: Omega-3s are also vital during pregnancy for the baby's brain and eye development and may help reduce the risk of preterm birth.

Eye-Opening and Heart-Expanding
Format: Paperback
I am incredibly grateful for this book. It gave me profound insight into essential truths of Christian faith and doctrine by allowing me to see them through a radically different lens than my internal lens. Plus, it opened me up enormously to the experience of black Americans who express the pain and challenge of life in our country thoughtfully and provocatively. I left this reading chastened, desiring more conversation, moved to listen better, and hoping to live differently.

Best book I've read in last 10 years!
Format: Paperback
I'm absolutely blown away. I finished the book this morning. I have been recommending it to anyone and everyone who asks me "So, what you reading?". I'm known for having a book stack a mile high. I ran out of my first yellow highlighter! Profound stuff. The subtitle, How African American Literature Can Make Our Faith More Whole and Just, doesn't do the book justice. It is soooo much more. I highly recommend!

Countee Cullen chapter
Format: Paperback
This book is a great read. I’m not even sure how to encapsulate my thoughts on it, but let me say the chapter, “Jesus,” on the poetry of Countee Cullen is brilliant and a masterclass on discipleship, suffering, identity, projecting onto Jesus. This one chapter could literally be a course in Christian discipleship handling multiple aspects of the life of faith. I feel like I’m not doing the chapter, the book, or Claude Atcho justice here, but I deeply recommend this book and urge readers to really sit with the Cullen chapter and all its implications. What a gift Claude Atcho has given us here!

An exceptional, stunningly beautiful, and greatly needed book
Format: Paperback
Have you ever finished a book so heavy with truth and beauty and goodness that you don’t know how to sum it up? That’s where I am upon completing Claude Atcho’s Reading Black Books: How African American Literature Can Make Our Faith More Whole and Just. I’m the sort who marks up books with notes, underlining, and asterisks. Pages with ideas I want to return to get a folded corner. For this book? More pages are folded than not and a flip through the book reveals copious amounts of fuchsia markings. Full disclosure: Claude is a writer friend; we’ve chatted about faith, books, work, writing, and podcasting. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of his book, knowing it would be fantastic. You might think I was biased in that assumption, considering our previous connection, considering I received an ARC from Brazos Press. What I found from the first pages was even more than expected: my friend as pastor, shepherd, prophet, counselor, guide. Claude features 10 key creative African American works to cast a vision for human flourishing rooted in the power and love of God found in Jesus Christ. Just listen to this moving excerpt: “Healing is found in the constant individual and communal turn toward the tender mercies of God, who calls us to a theological remembrance: to locate our history in his, to make sense of our memory in his memory, to process our wounds in his wounds” (126). This book is beautifully written, theologically robust, and desperately needed. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is stunning.
