Finalist for the 2016 PEN Center USA Award for Translation

In 1809, at the age of eighteen, Henriette Faber enrolled herself in medical school in Paris--and since medicine was a profession prohibited to women, she changed her name to Henri in order to matriculate. She would spend the next fifteen years practicing medicine and living as a man.

Drafted to serve as a surgeon in Napoleon's army, Faber endured the horrors of the 1812 retreat across Russia. She later embarked to the Caribbean and set up a medical practice in a remote Cuban village, where she married Juana de Le n, an impoverished local. Three years into their marriage, de Le n turned Faber in to the authorities, demanding that the marriage be annulled. A sensational legal trial ensued, and Faber was stripped of her medical license, forced to dress as a woman, sentenced to prison, and ultimately sent into exile. She was last seen on a boat headed to New Orleans in 1827.

In this, his last published work, Antonio Ben tez Rojo takes the outline provided by historical events and weaves a richly detailed backdrop for Faber, who becomes a vivid and complex figure grappling with the strictures of her time. Woman in Battle Dress is a sweeping, ambitious epic, in which Henriette Faber tells the story of her life, a compelling, entertaining, and ultimately triumphant tale.

Praise for Woman in Battle Dress

"Woman in Battle Dress by Antonio Ben tez-Rojo, which has been beautifully translated from the Spanish by Jessica Ernst Powell, is the extraordinary account of an extraordinary person. Ben tez-Rojo blows great gusts of fascinating fictional wind onto the all but forgotten embers of the actual Henriette Faber, and this blazing tale of her adventures as a military surgeon and a husband and about a hundred other fascinating things is both something we want and need to hear."--Laird Hunt, author of Neverhome

"A picaresque novel starring an adventurous heroine, who caroms from country to country around the expanding Napoleonic empire, hooking up with a dazzling array of men (and women) as she goes. A wild ride "--Carmen Boullosa, author of Texas: The Great Theft

"As detailed as any work of history and as action filled as any swashbuckler, Woman in Battle Dress is not only Antonio Ben tez Rojo's last and most ambitious book, but also his masterpiece. In this graceful English translation of Henriette Faber's autobiography--more than fiction, less than fact--American readers will have access to one of the most engaging novels to come out of Latin America in recent years."--Gustavo P rez-Firmat, Columbia University

Favorite for dry climate
I live in a dry desert and these are the only moisturizing masks I see instant results. For best results after doing my evening skincare routine I apply the mask one hour before bed. I store them in the fridge so they feel cool and soft on my skin. Once you get the hang of applying them it’s very easy the second time. I sleep with them on and remove them in the morning and my skin is glowing, plump and pores appear smaller. The mask itself is a thick durable jelly not like the typical sheet masks. The price for this is worth it if you wear the mask minimum 2-5 hours once a week

Youth Serum?
You will not regret trying this! The results are amazing!!! 🤩 After the first use my skin looked healthier, brighter, more even toned and pores were diminished. I look young again. (I’m 57.) I have neglected my face for a few years after being the kind of girl who never left the house without makeup. I knew I needed some deep repair and thought a mask would help. Lo and behold, my beloved Amazon gave me Biodance! I just used my third mask last night and I’m still excited to peel it off the next morning. My face doesn’t look all dewy like the pictures and video but it’s definitely a huge improvement. I didn’t realize it was that dry. A couple tips-don’t worry when you first apply it if it’s not perfectly positioned. There is wiggle room and it will slide a bit. Handle carefully! It’s slimy & slippery. You can use the eyes and lips (cut outs) for other problem areas and you can tear off the nose as well. It feels cooling the moment you put it on. I had no irritation at all. I took the advice of one reviewer and sat on the couch with my head leaned back for about an hour before I went to bed to let it dry a little. Nice “ME” time. Thanks a zillion Amazon and Biodance! I vow to use a mask weekly from now until the end of time. ❤️

Cool Product
I love these masks. The are cool and white in color when you put them on and they turn clear when the stuff is absorbed. I was new to a mask that has to be on 3 hours or more, but it was cool. I had very little skin irritation and I have sensitive skin. They are very easy to put on and take off. They have a heavy cooling sensation when you first put them on because the are really wet, but it dissipated over time and was comfortable to sleep in. I use these masks twice a week. I will definitely keep using them. My skin feels softer and more firm in the morning. I just take off the mask and apply a little moisturizer with sunscreen and I'm good for the day.
