Thailand faces significant challenges with plastic pollution, due to its extensive coastline and heavy reliance on single-use plastics. Major cities like Bangkok generate vast amounts of plastic waste, much of which ends up in rivers and eventually the ocean. The tourism industry exacerbates the issue, contributing to litter on beaches and in waterways, threatening marine life and ecosystems.

This project partner purchases HDPE, LLDPE and PP, including single use plastics, from aggregators, such as junk shops, who buy the plastic waste from community collectors and informal sector waste pickers. 

The project partner sorts, cleans, and sends the plastic to its mechanical recycling partner, which produces post-consumer recycled plastic resin, with Global Recycled Standard (GRS), using various applications again.

The project plans to use money raised from credit sales to pay waste pickers more for plastic, to ensure more is collected and recycled in a closed loop, circular system.
