The Catholicos of the East and His People was written by Arthur J. Maclean and William H. Browne while on leave in England following five years of service in the Archbishop of CanterburyÕs Assyrian Mission among the Assyrians of Persia and Turkey. It was published in London in 1892. This book provides a valuable resource for modern Assyrians because it focuses mainly on the daily life and customs of the Assyrians, as well as the religious practices of their church. A certain degree of European ethno-centrism is to be expected from a book of this era. However, the modern reader will do well to look past this because, in common with other Anglican writers, these two men were keen observers and their writing is infused with a true respect and sympathy for the people they worked among.
