درباره این کتاب، به قلم نرگس ذاکرجعفری می‌خوانیم:«هدف اصلی تحقیق حاضر، مطالعه‌ی دگرگونی‌هایی است که در حیات سازها و ساختمان ریخت‌شناسانه‌ی آنها در دوره‌ای پانصد‌ساله از تاریخ ایران رخ داده‌اند، با مطالعه و بازنگری رسالات موسیقی قدیم ایران و متون تاریخی و اجتماعی و همچنین منابع تصویری، به بررسی حیات سازهای ایران در دوره‌ی تاریخی ایلخانیان تا پایان صفویه و چگونگی صعود و افول این سازها در این ادوار تاریخی می‌پردازیم. این کتاب در دو بخش و هفت فصل تدوین شده است. در مقدمه، اشارات کوتاهی داریم به رویدادهای تاریخی و اجتماعی ایران در دوره‌ی ایلخانیان تا پایان صفویه. در بخش اول به ریخت‌شناسی سازهای رایج در دوره‌های یادشده می‌پردازیم که سه فصل کتاب را به خود اختصاص داده است. در این بخش برای توصیف جنبه‌های ریخت‌شناسانه‌ی سازها به منابع مکتوب و منابع تصویری مراجعه شده است. در بخش دوم موارد اجرایی و تحولات سازها را در دوره‌های تاریخی مذکور مطالعه کرده‌ایم که چهار فصل کتاب را در برمی‌گیرد. در این فصول مباحثی چون فنون نوازندگی، موقعیت‌های کاربردی، تغییرات و دگرگونی سازها، مطالعه‌ی تطبیقی سازها در دوره‌های ایلخانی، تیموری و صفوی، و در نهایت عوامل مؤثر در حیات سازها از لحاظ صوتی، اجتماعی و تصویری مطرح شده‌اند.»
