Six Questions Your Kumon Franchise Financial Model Must Answer

We built this education franchise business plan model using deep research into the supplemental learning sector. Key assumptions like the 22.5% royalty, $473,000 year-one revenue, and the 9-month ramp-up to break-even are pre-populated but fully editable to fit your specific territory. This tool provides the data-driven clarity you need to move from a prospect to a confident operator.

When does the unit turn a profit?

The franchise unit profitability analysis shows the center reaching positive EBITDA of $70,000 in its first year. By year five, as student volume matures and tuition revenue hits $851,000, annual EBITDA climbs to $255,000 after all royalties and materials. Profitability is a function of enrollment density and keeping instructor hours tightly mapped to student sessions.

Strategies for Profit Growth

  • Optimize instructor-to-student ratios to lower labor per session.
  • Upsell existing math students into reading programs for higher LTV.
  • Reduce workbook waste by 2% to improve gross margins.
[dynamic_pic9]

What is the required capital allocation?

To launch this tutoring center financial projection, you need approximately $126,000 in initial capital for the build-out and equipment. This covers the $50,000 in leasehold improvements and $20,000 for furniture, plus a $2,000 franchise fee. The model also accounts for a significant cash reserve to handle the ramp-up phase before the center reaches its break-even point in month nine.

Major Capital Uses

  • Leasehold Improvements: $50,000 for center build-out.
  • Furniture and Fixtures: $20,000 for study stations.
  • Computers and Technology: $15,000 for student tracking.
[dynamic_pic10]

What is the expected investment return?

The franchise investment ROI is characterized by a 3-year payback period and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 4.47%. While the initial returns are steady, the real value lies in the recurring revenue for tutoring franchises, which drives a 0.62 return on equity. This model helps you see how long-term student retention compounds your initial investment over the five-year hold.

Key Investor Metrics

  • Payback Period: 3 years to recover initial investment.
  • Internal Rate of Return: 4.47% over 5 years.
  • Year 5 EBITDA Margin: Approximately 30% of total revenue.
[dynamic_pic11]

Where is the unit break-even point?

The center hits its break-even date in September 2026, roughly 9 months after the initial investment begins. The primary driver for reaching this point is the enrollment volume for Math and Reading tuition, which must cover the $4,200 monthly rent and the high 22.5% royalty burden. Break-even is less about the $15,000 in enrollment fees and more about consistent monthly recurring tuition.

Levers for Faster Break-even

  • Aggressive pre-opening marketing to secure 50+ students by day one.
  • Negotiating a rent abatement for the first three months.
  • Using part-time instructors to match labor to actual student load.
[dynamic_pic12]

What is the cash runway status?

The model identifies the lowest cash point in August 2026, just before the center breaks even. With a minimum cash position of $947,000 indicated in the data, you have a massive buffer, but in a real-world scenario, you should monitor the timing of the $50,000 leasehold payments. Managing the gap between paying instructors and receiving monthly tuition is the key to protecting your operating budget.

Actions to Protect Cash

  • Phase furniture purchases to align with actual enrollment growth.
  • Negotiate net-30 terms with workbook and material suppliers.
  • Delay hiring the administrative coordinator until student count hits 75.
[dynamic_pic13]

How do different scenarios impact results?

Estimating profitability for new franchise locations requires looking at how a 10% drop in enrollment affects your ability to pay the 22.5% royalty. In a high-growth scenario, revenue jumps from $473,000 to $851,000, which defintely accelerates your ROI and boosts the year-5 EBITDA to $255,000. Low scenarios usually fail not on rent, but on the inability to scale instructor costs down when student volume dips.

Improving High-Case Odds

  • Maintain a 90%+ student retention rate through parent communication.
  • Maximize the $450 monthly marketing spend on local SEO.
  • Run summer workshops to bridge the seasonal enrollment gap.

Good Basic Chair with a Few Drawbacks
Color: Black
I bought this Amazon Basics office task chair for my boyfriend who works from home. Overall, it’s a decent, simple chair that gets the job done for everyday use, especially if you just need something functional and affordable. However, there are a couple of downsides. The recline doesn’t go back as much as he would like, so it’s not ideal if you prefer to lean back and relax between tasks. Also, after about a month of use, the wheels don’t glide as smoothly as they did at first, which can be a bit frustrating when rolling across the floor. Overall, it’s a solid basic chair for light use, but if you want something with a deeper recline or super smooth mobility long-term, you might want to consider other options. Still a reasonable purchase depending on your needs.

Had for just over 9 years now and still pretty solid
Color: Black
I ordered this chair back in December 2015 for our front office, and it's been moved to our back shop where we fabricate. We're not a gentle work space by any stretch of the imagination; we build stuff and it's messy, lots of tools etc. This chair has held up surprisingly well! The faux leather is delaminating almost entirely on the seat but honestly, I'd expect that for faux leather on something that is used daily. The seat pad, in my opinion, has gotten de-poofed. So it's not plush anymore but still usable. I've asked the guy that's using it if they want an upgrade/update and they said they like it and don't want to change it out just yet. That's saying something! The size is nice and wide. We've had a range of differently sized folks sit in the chair over the years and the seat was always comfortable (less now without so much seat poof), I was able to sit cross-legged and the whole chair felt sturdy then as it does now. All of the standards functions you'd want an office chair to do, it can still do: it goes up and down smoothly, it rolls just fine, it's still pivot-reclines comfortably and doesn't feel like it's going to topple. I like it!

Good enough
Color: Black
Comfortable chair. Easy to put together. Allen nuts aren't cut perfectly so sometimes hard to get the wrench in there. My biggest complaint, and I didn't even realize this until I sat down in it, the arm rests are not adjustable and they are a little short for my liking.

I love it!
Color: Black
This chair is so comfy! I also love that it goes up super high (as a tall man it's nice to have the kicking my feet sensation... Lol). It's wider than I imagined and it the first chair with arms that I can fit in as an almost 500 pound dude. The lumbar support is nice and also adjustable, too. The wheels are high quality and move you fast. It was pretty easy to put together, but deff get help from someone to hold pieces in place
