Werewolves are aggressive towards humans, and during their illness, Animagi in their animal forms, provide safe company to them, help calm them down, and make their monthly transformations easier.

It is for the same reason three of the four Gryffindors, Hogwarts alums from the '70s - the Marauders transformed to help the fourth, Remus Lupin when his Werewolf side took over. It took Lupin's cleverest friends, James Potter, and Sirius Black three years to learn to how become Animagi, all because their best friend was inflicted with Lycanthropy.
