COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Understanding Parkinson’s Disease course. This program has been designed to equip you with clear, accessible, and medically informed knowledge about Parkinson’s disease (PD), including what it is, how it develops, how it affects movement and cognition, how it progresses, and how individuals, families, and carers can support safe and meaningful daily living. You will explore the causes and risk factors associated with PD, the primary and secondary symptoms, the behavioural and psychological changes that may occur, and the practical considerations that support wellbeing throughout the course of the disease.

This course begins by examining what Parkinson’s disease is, whether it is primarily a condition of older adults, and the causes currently understood through scientific research. You will explore the extent to which Parkinson’s disease is hereditary, whether conditions such as Gulf War Syndrome contribute to PD, and what evidence exists regarding viruses, drugs and strokes as potential causes. This section also examines the two occupations historically associated with higher PD risk and discusses whether someone can die from Parkinson’s disease directly or from complications related to its progression. You will then explore the primary motor symptoms of PD, the secondary symptoms that often accompany the condition, and why PD is categorised as a movement disorder. This section also examines what it means for PD to be progressive and how symptoms evolve over time.

The next learning area focuses on lifestyle considerations for people living with Parkinson’s disease. You will explore whether individuals with PD can drive safely, how social life may be affected, and the impact of PD on sexual wellbeing and interpersonal relationships. This section also examines how PD is staged, how clinicians determine whether the condition is worsening, and the purpose of the modified Hoehn and Yahr staging system in evaluating progression. You will explore why individuals with PD may suddenly become unable to move and what neurological mechanisms underlie “freezing,” as well as why some individuals experience excessive or involuntary movements. This section also examines why falls occur, whether pain is part of PD, why some people act out their dreams, and how sleep-related behaviours are influenced by neurological changes.

A further learning area explores the cognitive and emotional features associated with Parkinson’s disease. You will examine whether depression is part of PD, how cognitive changes develop, and whether people with PD can “lose their mind” as symptoms progress. This section also explores the common dementia-like symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, why some individuals see things that aren’t there, and how hallucinations arise from changes in brain chemistry or medication effects. You will also explore the prevalence of constipation in PD and why autonomic nervous system changes contribute to digestive difficulties.

The final learning area focuses on practical support, safety and daily living. You will explore how to make the home environment safer for someone with PD, how to reduce falls and support independence, and how to adjust daily routines to accommodate mobility changes. This section also examines strategies for helping a person with PD prepare food and eat, including adaptations, environmental controls and support strategies that maintain dignity, comfort and autonomy. Throughout, the emphasis is on understanding the lived experience of Parkinson’s disease and applying strategies that promote safety, engagement and quality of life.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand what Parkinson’s disease is, identify its causes and risk factors, recognise primary and secondary symptoms, explain how progression is assessed, understand cognitive and emotional changes, support daily living needs, and apply practical strategies that enhance safety, wellbeing and independence for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.

Looks decent but is slightly under engineered
Size: 41 Inch Extra Long, Color: White Faux Marble, Size: 41 Inch Extra Long, Color: White Faux Marble
Five stars for packaging, quality of materials and instructions. It's a really good looking product out of the box. No scratches or defects in workmanship. Material fit and finish is very good. If you've ever assembled anything from Ikea, the hardware will seem familiar. The problems that led to me giving it 3 stars occur in the engineering. All of the weight transfer to the center with just four corner anchor points creates a sag. If you drop a 4' level across the top after installing, it's a noticeable 1/8" dip in the middle as gravity pulls on the unsupported center. If you're one of those people that notices an out of level picture on a wall from fifty paces, this is going to be a problem for you. Being that I knew it would only get worse with time and eventually make me insane, I installed a very small L bracket in the middle under the bottom shelf, pushing the entire thing up until the deflection was gone. I also tossed the anchors that came with it as those are for concrete/block walls and used metal EZ anchors that are rated for drywall. If you use the included anchors in 1/2“ drywall, there's a good chance they'll pull out. Toggle bolts would also be a good alternative. Another small detail that's missing is the lack of a plug or cover for the four exposed cams making up the vertical center support. Depending on your viewing angle and how much stuff you'll store will determine if these are visible or not. Including a simple white decal would have been reasonable. I used some white, stick-on melamine screw covers I had lying around to try and hide the cam locks better. Lastly, I wish this were made in plain white. While the faux marble somewhat matches our dining table, The veining is too pronounced. Plain white would have been better.

Revelation for the serious Bible student
Format: Hardcover
The most complete discussion of Revelation I have read. Be aware it is written in a very academic style, so not for casual reading.

Interesting!
Format: Hardcover
I was surprised to see Schreiner in Revelation. I unfairly had him as a Paul guy only in my mind. It turned out those skills that he is well known for on Paul are found here. This commentary is, without doubt, a major work on Revelation. It walks in the room and joins the big boys. But just like the other champions of the modern major academic, exegetical commentaries this one takes an “eclectic” viewpoint. That’s the rage of the hour. Doesn’t make anyone too happy, but then again not too angry either. Like me, you may not take an eclectic approach but rather a specific viewpoint in one of the major categories. Will you still be helped by this commentary? I think you definitely will. What are its strengths? Impeccable scholarship stands out. Sometimes that’s a pile of dry bones, but here it has life. Here the scholarly “interacting” pays off. It begins in the Introduction and continues in the commentary proper. Here the interaction necessarily involves the different perspectives and that enlightens no matter where you come from. Another asset of this commentary is its tone. He fairly represents other viewpoints and humbly assesses and shares his own. I often don’t exactly agree, but he’s easy to follow. It’s easy for me to weigh as I’m looking at a fairly represented picture. I wouldn’t call the structure of Revelation as a whole a strength here. Perhaps that’s the collateral damage of an eclectic position, though he gives a serviceable outline. He does give, however, some nice thoughts on structure in the smaller periscopes. I’m convinced he sheds light in each passage no matter your overall prophetic outlook. Outside of one that lines up perfectly for you (rare), what more could you ask for? I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
