COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Fundamentals of Timber Selection for Cabinetry course. This program is designed to provide you with the foundational knowledge and skills to make informed timber choices for cabinetry projects. Timber selection is a critical aspect of cabinetry, influencing the durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the finished product.

This course begins by emphasising the importance of timber selection, providing an overview of timber types and their uses, and outlining the key factors that influence timber choices in cabinetry.

The properties of wood play a significant role in its selection for cabinetry applications. This section explores the physical attributes of timber, such as grain, texture, and colour, as well as mechanical properties like strength, hardness, and durability. Additionally, it examines the impact of moisture content on wood performance, ensuring participants can choose timber suited to specific conditions and purposes.

Hardwoods and softwoods are the two primary categories of timber used in cabinetry. This section introduces the characteristics of hardwoods, known for their strength and durability, and softwoods, valued for their versatility and availability. A comparative analysis highlights the suitability of each type for different cabinetry needs.

Sustainable timber sourcing is a growing priority in modern woodworking. This section discusses certification standards such as FSC and PEFC, ethical and sustainable harvesting practices, and the benefits of using recycled and reclaimed timber to minimise environmental impact while maintaining quality.

Certain timber species are especially popular for cabinetry due to their unique properties. This section provides an overview of commonly used hardwoods like oak, walnut, and maple, softwoods like pine, cedar, and spruce, and exotic options known for their distinctive features and visual appeal.

Timber grading and classification are essential for selecting the right material for cabinetry projects. This section explains how to understand timber grades, identify defects, and differentiate between structural and appearance grades to ensure the chosen timber meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Moisture content and wood stability are crucial factors in timber performance. This section examines the role of moisture in timber behaviour, techniques for measuring and controlling moisture levels, and how seasonal changes can affect wood stability in cabinetry applications.

The strength and durability of timber are key considerations in cabinetry, particularly for load-bearing components. This section explores how to assess strength properties, understand durability ratings for various environments, and address wear and tear in high-traffic settings.

Grain patterns and aesthetics significantly impact the visual appeal of cabinetry. This section covers wood grain and texture variations, techniques for matching grain patterns in cabinet designs, and how to enhance the overall look of cabinetry with unique timber features.

Timber finishing compatibility ensures longevity and beauty. This section discusses preparing timber for stains and finishes, the effects of finishes on different timber types, and choosing the best finishes to protect and enhance the cabinetry’s appearance.

Timber availability and cost are practical factors in selection decisions. This section examines the regional availability of different species, cost considerations that influence choices, and strategies for balancing budget constraints with quality and aesthetics.

Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain timber quality. This section provides best practices for storing timber to prevent warping and cracking, handling techniques to avoid damage during transport, and safe stacking methods for storage.

Environmental considerations are increasingly important in timber selection. This section focuses on reducing waste through efficient use of materials, using low-impact timber products, and incorporating eco-friendly practices to support sustainability in cabinetry projects.

Timber treatments and preservation enhance durability and resistance. This section explores preservative treatments, fire retardant and anti-insect options, and surface treatments that protect timber from moisture and stains, ensuring longevity in various applications.

Matching timber to cabinetry styles is crucial for achieving the desired design aesthetic. This section examines timber choices for modern designs, traditional cabinetry, and unique options for custom and bespoke projects that cater to diverse client preferences.

Innovations in timber technology provide new opportunities in cabinetry. This section introduces engineered wood products like plywood, MDF, and particleboard, laminated and veneered solutions, and advanced treatments that improve performance and expand design possibilities.

Timber selection often involves challenges such as defects, limited availability, and managing client expectations. This section offers strategies to address these issues, ensuring successful outcomes even in complex scenarios.

Finally, case studies and practical applications provide real-world insights into timber selection. This section highlights examples of successful projects, lessons learned from common mistakes, and strategies for developing effective timber selection processes for future cabinetry work.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to make informed timber selections, enhancing the quality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal of your cabinetry projects.

Each section is complemented with examples to illustrate the concepts and techniques discussed.

Glowy SPF skin tint, Great skin-like coverage
Color: Medium
I’ve tried a lot of skin tints and this one actually surprised me. The Colorescience Flex Shield gives that “your skin but healthier” look without feeling heavy or greasy. I love that it starts white and adjusts to your skin tone — it blends in really naturally and evens everything out without looking makeup-y. The finish is glowy but still skin-like, and knowing I’m getting SPF protection at the same time makes it perfect for everyday wear. On busy days this has honestly replaced my foundation.

OBSESSED - My New Go-To SPF ✨
Color: Glow
I don’t say this lightly - I’m OBSESSED. The Colorescience Glow SPF is hands down the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. This formula makes my skin look unreal - plumped, radiant, and healthy from morning to night. It gives that lit-from-within glow without ever looking greasy or heavy. I’m super sensitive to sunscreens (most of them irritate my skin and eyes), but this one is perfection. No reactions, no discomfort- just smooth, glowing skin all day. I also ordered the Flex and can’t wait to try it next. This is officially my forever SPF

Best Sunblock ever!!
Color: Bronze
I kept seeing this all over my social media, so I decided to do some research before purchasing. I was pleased at how high the reviews were. I decided to purchase and I’m totally obsessed! I’ve been using for a few months now and I don’t even wear any foundation anymore. This has literally replaced it. I love how it glides on like butter, and how It’s so smooth and light. I get so many compliments on my face. Best sunblock ever!! I’m forever a customer! Highly recommended!!

Bronze and Matte are brown girl friendly
Color: Bronze, Color: Bronze
TLDR: I got bronze and matte formulas and I have oily skin. I’m very happy with these. Bronze is a perfect match until it oxidizes so I mix it with medium for the perfect shade. Bronze will be flexible across a wide range of skin tones. Matte formula is perfect on its own, more like a satin matte finish. I think matte has less pigment than bronze. Both are easy to apply and reapply, blends nicely, zero white cast- no Casper. What I liked: I really like the finish on these. I have oily skin and these work well for me. They don’t burn my eyes. Bronze gives a little glow while matte tones down the shine but it’s not too matte, more like satin matte. I can wear matte on its own but I have to mix bronze with medium because it oxidizes after a few minutes. These are both great options for daily wear. What could be better: I wouldn’t change anything about the matte formula. But it can get thick after several reapplications. I wish the bronze formula didn’t oxidize. While it doesn’t oxidize every time, you just never know when it will. But mixing it with medium helps to keep it chill. Skin tone: For reference, I usually have to mix shades to get my perfect match. But my skin tone tans very easily and is lighter in winter, darker in summer. So I mix medium with bronze or tan. Some of my foundation colors if it helps you: Armani 7.8, Hourglass 11, EL DW 4N2, MUFE 3N42, NARS Aruba, Dior 4N, Haus Labs 330. Would I recommend: Yes! This is best for brown girls who want a tinted sunscreen without a white cast. And it’s even for lighter people who want to bronze up their skin. About my photos/video: Photos show me wearing each formula as well as swatches. Hope this helps!

Color: Glow, Color: Glow
I love the GLOW of this product and that you get some SPF protection. I have used it for years and put on with a serum to even it out and a blending sponge. I would definitely recommend and have bought it as a gift for my sisters
